Coping with a tough sponsor

Video: Three ways to handle a tough sponsor

Handling a difficult sponsor is a challenge for any PM, particularly when the sponsor is your boss or outranks you by several levels. Watch the video and comment on the consequences of how each PM handled this tough sponsor. Don't just think about the immediate sponsor reaction but also what's likely to happen as the project moves through the lifecycle.

This video is drawn from the library of "PMs in Action" videos that we us in our person 1-on-1 web classes.

Planning a project as we go is a recipe for distaster-especially when you commit to a due date with no data about the project! It's better to get a clear scope definition and upset the sponsor a little bit now rather than a LOT later.

The 3rd project manager was exactly right. Ideally, we need to know the scope of the project, the resources we'll have available and estimates on the work before we can really tell the sponsor how long a project will take.

Unfortunately, I have a sponsor like that woman who refuses to tell me what she wants until it's often too late. What can I do to convince her that giving me a due date is not good project planning?
