Hands-on Learning

In each of the modules of this basic course you have reading and a lecture where you learn about one of the steps in the project management process. Then you apply it to a real project case study in a simulation with your instructor who gives you feedback on all your work and will ask you to redo it if it's not correct.

1. You start by meeting with the company president, Dan Morton, to find out his needs. He wants you to deliver the project in two months but is a little vague on the business results he wants, so you have to help him define the scope.
2. Using the scope, you meet with the managers who will be affected by the project to find out their requirements. You turn these into a map of the steps in the project.
3. You gather information on risks and constraints and develop your project charter presentation in PowerPoint. You deliver it to the executives in a live presentation over the Internet with your instructor.
4. Then, you begin the detailed project planning by developing your work breakdown structure in MS Project.  You break the deliverables down into individual assignments for your team members and vendors.
5. Next you sequence the tasks to create an efficient plan.
6. You negotiate with your team members and estimate how long their tasks will take. Some people pad their estimates and you have to apply what you have learned to deal with this.
7. You optimize the overall schedule to make the best possible use of your resources and finish the project as soon as possible.
8. When you present the overall schedule, you need to deal with a conflict between two of the managers who will be affected by your project.
9. You receive status reports from your team members that you use to update the schedule, spot problems and develop solutions. You make a live status report presentation to the executives and discuss the problems and how you will solve them.

Student Comments

Michelle Smalley Lane
“I think the overall understanding of how a project should be evaluated is the most common pitfall. We seem to fall into some of these pitfalls of activity driven projects and projects that are taken off track. I will benefit from the methodology that was taught in this course."
